Snowy night

Peace!  The bell cries out,
but far away, faintly. Over there

a marble cemetery
rises, upon it the shadow falls silent:
and fades into the black sky
a wide and fleeting light.
Peace! peace! peace! peace!
in the white obscurity.

        From the collection “Myricae” (1891-1900)

Notte di Neve

Pace! grida la campana,
ma lontana, fioca. Là

un marmoreo cimitero
sorge, su cui l'ombra tace:
e ne sfuma al cielo nero
un chiarore ampio e fugace.
Pace! pace! pace! pace!
nella bianca oscurità.
